HARRISBURG - Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) announced today the long budgetary delay is one step closer to being over after the House passed a $50.1 billion budget for the 2025-26 Fiscal Year.
He released the following statement:
"Today, I voted in favor of the budget because there are significant wins that will benefit Somerset County residents in the long term.
"The biggest victory is that Pennsylvania will be removed from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) - a carbon tax program that drives up electric bills and limits energy production. There will be no state-level replacement.
"RGGI, which was unilaterally levied by the governor, is responsible for the Commonwealth missing out on 22,000 direct energy-related jobs and nearly $8 billion in economic development while skyrocketing ratepayer fees. We can now export more energy to lower costs and support good jobs.
"This budget agreement also requires state regulators to speed up the permitting process, enhancing Pennsylvania's economic growth opportunities and increasing competitiveness while holding bureaucrats accountable. I have heard numerous horror stories about permitting and how the Commonwealth missed out on valuable chances because of it. We want to attract more investment here because everyone benefits.
"I am pleased to see this budget standoff finally end."
