SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. - On June 27 and 28, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park invite the public to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan's Island. The patriot victory on June 28, 1776 was the first decisive win over the British Royal Navy during the American Revolution. The parks will observe a fee-free weekend and host a variety of special programs to celebrate this commemoration known as Carolina Day.
Ceremony: On June 28, the Carolina Day event will feature a special ceremony from 10 a.m. to noon to commemorate the 250th anniversary.
Living history encampment: Visitors can learn about the Battle of Sullivan's Island by talking with living historians in period clothing. The living historians will portray soldiers and civilians.
Cannon and musket firing demonstrations: The event will feature a cannon firing demonstration on Saturday at 10 a.m., noon, 2 and 4 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 and 3 p.m. There will be musket firing demonstrations every two hours on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
History talks: The parks will offer special history talks on June 27 at 9:30, 11 and 11:30 a.m. and 1, 3 and 3:30 p.m. On June 28, the parks will host a talk at 4 p.m.
Interactive activities: The parks will offer hands-on interactive activities at history row where visitors can learn and play historic games; make their own flag, cartridge, and sachet; learn about the clothing of the time and more.
Demonstrations: Various demonstrations will feature indigo dying, brick making, colonial cooking, colonial dancing and more.
Music: The Parris Island Marine Band will play patriotic music at 4 p.m. on June 28.
Logistics: All activities will take place at Fort Moultrie, located at 1214 Middle St. on Sullivan's Island. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. on both days and end at 4:30 p.m. on June 27 and 5 p.m. on June 28.
Travel to and from Sullivan's Island can be congested during summer with limited parking. This event will have a free parking and shuttle service in Mount Pleasant at Lucy Beckham High School or Mount Pleasant Town Hall. Visitors can access updates for parking and traffic on social media.
Food trucks, restrooms and potable water are available at the event. The parks encourage visitors to bring food and water bottles to accommodate their needs. Visitors should wear sunscreen, bring a hat or sunglasses and be prepared for hot and humid weather.
