Latest stats on snow and ice response just a click away

SPRINGFIELD - Want to see how winter is measuring up in Illinois? The Illinois Department of Transportation this week launched a new online dashboard at idot.illinois.gov that features up-to-date stats on salt, materials and labor hours needed to keep the public safe and moving during snow-and-ice season.

"Few things get us more attention at IDOT than the work of our exceptional snow and ice teams," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi. "The new dashboard is a quick, easy way to get you information on how the public's resources are being put to use."

The page will be updated regularly and include the latest tally on the number of plows that have been hit by other vehicles, reinforcing the message "Don't Crowd the Plow!" Any plow that's struck, even a minor bump, must be pulled from service for inspection, resulting in one fewer piece of equipment available to plow and treat roads.

The new dashboard page also includes a tutorial on the popular winter road conditions map on GettingAroundIllinois.com, which relays data to the public from plow drivers out in the field through a cloud-based system, providing a general overview of IDOT-maintained routes that are clear or covered with snow and ice.

The website has a summary on how salt and other materials are used to combat snow and ice, as well as video shorts on winter operations at IDOT.

No matter the season - winter or construction - you also can follow IDOT on Facebook, X and Instagram for the latest on what's being done to improve safety, mobility and quality of life throughout Illinois.
