RESULTS OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLE INSPECTION CHECKPOINT

RIVERSIDE, CA - The Riverside Police Department's Traffic Bureau recently conducted a commercial vehicle inspection checkpoint in response to ongoing complaints about commercial vehicles violating the Riverside Municipal Code, which restricts vehicles with three or more axles from operating on certain city streets. The checkpoint took place in the westbound lanes of Central Avenue, just west of Victoria Avenue.

The results of the operation were as follows:

• 16 commercial vehicles inspected

• 57 Riverside Municipal Code axle restriction violations

• 2 violations for improper use of air brakes

• 2 violations for bald tires

• 1 unlicensed driver

• 1 commercial vehicle and trailer towed

Officers also issued 14 citations to non-commercial drivers for using a cellphone while driving, 4 citations for red-light violations, and 15 citations for speeding.

Section 10.56.050 of the Riverside Municipal Code states:

"When signs are erected giving notice thereof, no person shall operate any commercial vehicle exceeding three (3) axles at any time upon the streets or parts of streets listed below, except that such vehicle may be operated thereon for the purpose of delivering or picking up materials or merchandise or the performance of services in connection with and in aid of a property in the block, and then only by entering such street at the intersection nearest the destination of the vehicle and proceeding thereon no farther than the nearest intersection thereafter."

This section applies to the following roadways:

• Alessandro Boulevard between Central Avenue and Trautwein Road

• Arlington Avenue between Horace Street and Chicago Avenue

• Central Avenue between Fremont Street and Brockton Avenue

• Central Avenue between Alessandro Boulevard and State Route 91

• Chicago Avenue between Arlington Avenue and Central Avenue

• Iowa Avenue between Spruce Street and Blaine Street

• Jurupa Avenue between Fremont Street and Brockton Avenue

• Main Street between Columbia Avenue and the SR-60 Freeway

Riverside Police Motor Officer Jesse Castro explained, "Just because you see a commercial vehicle traveling on one of the restricted streets doesn't necessarily mean it's violating the ordinance. There are exceptions for vehicles making deliveries or picking up merchandise. These trucks bring food to our grocery stores and deliver the materials we rely on for home improvements. But our city streets are not meant to be a shortcut for truck drivers going from one freeway to another."
