Earlier today, The Ohio State University engaged in a second service project to give back to the community hosting a post-season football game, this time for the College Football Playoff National Championship in Atlanta.
The university's Office of Student Life led the event that brought Ohio State students, parents, alumni, university leaders and others to the American Hilton hotel to pack meals for distribution to those in need in the Atlanta area.
The event, held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, honors the legacy of the civil rights leader. More than 100 volunteers packed thousands of meals over two hours. The meals will be distributed by the nonprofit group Core2Globe.org through the food pantry at Fulton County's Banneker High School.
Coca-Cola served as a sponsor for the event.
"As a Georgia Buckeye myself, I can share that we are thrilled to be in Atlanta, working with the Core2Globe team. This city has welcomed Buckeye Nation with warmth and enthusiasm, so it's only right that we take the time to give back to this special place," said Melissa Shivers, senior vice president for Student Life. "Ohio State takes pride in supporting local communities, both the ones we call home and the ones we visit."
Ohio State has a tradition of organizing a service project in the host city of its bowl games, dating back to the 1998 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Most recently, the school teamed up with the University of Oregon for a similar food packing project at this year's Rose Bowl.
