New Jersey Monitor: GOP candidates for governor spar over anti-abortion bona fides
According to the New Jersey Monitor, the Garden State's GOP gubernatorial candidates spent the weekend fighting over who holds the most extreme anti-choice beliefs in the race and outlining their plans to rip away fundamental freedoms if they are elected.
While the report notes that Bill Spadea has racked up endorsements from New Jersey's largest anti-abortion organizations, including New Jersey Right to Life, Ciattarelli is also pledging to sign new abortion restrictions into law , despite claiming during his 2021 race he would "sign a bill protecting abortion rights if the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade." The slate of Republican candidates have promised to ban abortion outright, defund access to health care facilities like Planned Parenthood, and appoint anti-abortion judges to push their agenda through the courts.
"In case there was any doubt that this field of Republican candidates is too extreme for New Jersey, they spent the weekend fighting to prove their willingness to strip away women's reproductive rights," said DGA Campaign Communications Advisor Emma O'Brien. "By taking aim at abortion rights, Jack Ciattarelli and Bill Spadea are giving New Jersey voters one more sign that they will take the Garden State backwards, and can't be trusted to protect fundamental freedoms."
