LOCAL NEWS | University of Pittsburgh Heinz Chapel Fleche Restoration Recognized with Building Excellence Award

The restoration of the University of Pittsburgh's Heinz Chapel fleche has received the Master Builders' Association of Western Pennsylvania Building Excellence Award in the Renovation Construction $5-$20 million category.

After multiple decorative grotesques dislodged from the fleche, WJE accessed the full height of the structure from the interior as part of our facade ordinance inspection and identified widespread corrosion of the steel framing, including significant section loss at access platforms, panel connections, and structural gusset plates. In addition, panels were observed to have open seams, tears, and holes.

After confirming corrosion in the fleche's supporting steel armature, WJE conducted an extensive condition assessment of both the structural system and the ornamental sheet metal cladding. To facilitate the work, full-height scaffolding was installed, which required additional structural steel to reinforce the existing roof structure and to support access through the investigation and repair process.

We developed detailed repair documents and assisted the University in selecting construction manager at-risk services. Construction administration services included regular site visits, shop visits, reviewing submittals, and project correspondence.
