LACEY, Wash. - The Utilities and Transportation Commission is reminding Washington residents that a new area code, 564, will be added as an overlay to the existing 206 area code starting June 10, 2025.

The commission approved this overlay to ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers in the region. The 206-area code serves Seattle, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Mercer, Bainbridge, Vashon Island, the northern portion of Des Moines, and surrounding communities. The 564 area code, which currently overlays the 360 area code, will now also be assigned within the 206 region.

Starting June 10, 2025, customers in the 206 region may receive a 564 number when requesting new service or an additional phone line, once all 206 numbers are assigned. Customers will continue to dial 10-digits for local calls, as they do today.

Key Facts

• Current phone numbers and area codes will stay the same.

• Call rates and coverage areas will not change.

• Local calls will remain local, even between 206 and 564 numbers.

• Keep dialing 10 digits (area code + number) for local calls.

• Dial 1 + area code + number for long-distance calls.

• You can still dial three-digit numbers for 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, 811, 911, and 988, if available in the community.

How to Prepare

Customers should continue to identify and share their telephone numbers using the full 10-digit format (3-digit area code + 7-digit number). Materials such as websites, business documents, personal stationery, checks, and personal or pet ID tags should also be updated to include the area code.

Customers should also ensure that automatic dialing equipment and other systems recognize 564 as a valid area code. This includes:

• Stored numbers in wireless or cordless phones
• Contact lists and speed dialers
• Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) systems
• Fax machines
• Internet dial-up numbers
• Call forwarding settings
• Voicemail services
• Medical alert devices
• Security systems and gate controls
• Ankle monitors and similar equipment.
