Preservation Magazine Celebrates Local Landmarks During America 250

The Charles County Department of Planning and Growth Management is proud to announce the release of Preservation Matters: Celebrating Charles County's Historic Places, a semiannual magazine celebrating historic preservation in Charles County.
This year's publication explores local history during and after the Revolutionary War era as part of the nation's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary. Local historians, archaeologists, preservation professionals, and community researchers collaborated to produce this special issue.
Highlights include a feature on Thomas Stone, a Charles County resident and one of four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence. Other featured topics include archaeological discoveries in Port Tobacco, Charles County's tobacco history, Black Civil War soldier James Gross, and the 1926 La Plata tornado.
The issue also recognizes the recipients of the 2025 Charles County Preservation Awards and highlights the Lower Cedar Point shoreline restoration project.
