SACRAMENTO, CA - Assemblymember Juan Carrillo (D-Palmdale), Vice Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, presented ACR 173, "Sister State: State of Jalisco," on the Assembly Floor, reaffirming California's commitment to formalizing a sister-state relationship with the State of Jalisco, Mexico. The resolution highlights the deep cultural, economic, and demographic ties shared between California and Jalisco and encourages continued binational collaboration rooted in mutual respect and shared opportunity.
"Our state and Jalisco share long-standing cultural, economic and demographic ties," said Assemblymember Carrillo during his floor presentation. "Those ties between our two states represent a shared past and a collaborative future together in policies ranging from agriculture and labor to technology and education."
During his remarks, Assemblymember Carrillo also emphasized the importance of diplomacy and maintaining strong international partnerships despite shifting national political dynamics.
"This resolution emphasizes diplomacy independent of federal policy shifts, emphasizing collaboration and respect instead of confrontation and threats," Carrillo stated. "This resolution also purposefully calls out immigrant protections because that's the reality on the ground being imposed upon our state at this time."
As Vice Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, Assemblymember Carrillo underscored the importance of recognizing and protecting immigrant communities that continue to shape California's economy and culture.
"It's sad to see a shift away from celebrating the historical contributions of immigrants to our state's agriculture, infrastructure, and culture," Carrillo said. "But where there is an understanding of the need to respectfully work together at a binational level, something we evidence ourselves with our legislative visits, let's do that as well."
ACR 173 builds on continued conversations between California legislators and leaders in Jalisco regarding opportunities to strengthen cooperation and formalize a sister-state partnership between both regions.
