Monterey County Free Libraries Joins "One Book, One Coast," the Largest Book Club on the West Coast
MCFL partners with 140+ libraries to host community-wide reading of George Takei's graphic memoir, 'They Called Us Enemy'
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA - Starting April 1, 2026, Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) joins forces with over 140 library systems across California, Oregon, and Washington for One Book, One Coast. This massive west coast initiative aims to connect readers through a single shared title: They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, Steven Scott, Justin Eisinger, and illustrated by Harmony Becker.
To bring this national conversation home, MCFL is partnering with the Japanese American Citizens League to host two landmark local history programs:
"This book discusses history that is deeply relevant to the residents of Monterey County," said Be Astengo, Managing Librarian and program coordinator. "By choosing a graphic novel, we are ensuring this powerful story is accessible to all our patrons. We are proud to offer copies in both English and Spanish."
They Called Us Enemy is a stunning graphic memoir recounting actor and activist George Takei's childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II. The work examines the core of American identity, loyalty, and community-themes that MCFL will explore through local book discussions and craft programs for all ages throughout the spring.
How to Participate:
Residents can borrow physical copies of They Called Us Enemy at any MCFL branch. Unlimited digital eBook copies are also available via Comics Plus and Libby, ensuring no wait times for interested readers.
