TAMPA, Fla. - For decades, talking about "a cure for multiple myeloma" felt out of reach. At Moffitt Cancer Center, that's no longer the case. Today, the world's top cancer doctors, engineers, and researchers aren't just dreaming of a cure for multiple myeloma, they are methodically building the science to achieve it, thanks to Mark and Cindy Pentecost.
Mark Pentecost, founder of It Works! and a Moffitt patient himself, has experienced the transformation of care firsthand. "The leaps I've seen, from my first diagnosis to the treatment options available now, are nothing short of extraordinary. Every step forward at Moffitt is the result of relentless research and innovation. That's why we give, and why we believe that, together, we'll see a cure," said Pentecost, announcing the new commitment at the Moffitt Board of Directors annual retreat.
"We are deeply grateful to the Pentecost family for their incredible support and generosity," said Patrick Hwu, MD, president and CEO of Moffitt Cancer Center. "Every breakthrough we make brings real hope to patients and families facing cancer. This gift propels that hope forward and brings us closer to transforming outcomes for countless lives."
Moffitt's experts are pioneering tools like the Ex Vivo Mathematical Myeloma Advisor (EMMA), a breakthrough platform powered by AI and advanced engineering. With this tool, Moffitt can now test and predict how a patient's specific cancer will respond to dozens of therapies, often tailoring a plan in days rather than months.
"The field of myeloma has seen remarkable progress in recent years, from the integration of monoclonal antibodies into frontline treatment for newly diagnosed patients to the emergence of CAR T-cell therapy and T-cell engagers in the relapsed setting," said Rachid Baz, MD, section head of Myeloma in Moffitt's Department of Malignant Hematology. "A cure for myeloma is now within reach for many patients, and this generous gift will help accelerate the research needed to achieve that goal. We are immensely appreciative of Mark and Cindy Pentecost for their generous support."
The Pentecost Foundation's previous gifts established the Pentecost Family Myeloma Research Center at Moffitt, uniting a powerhouse team dedicated to ending this disease. Their new investment will accelerate the pace of discovery and make the dream of a cure a reality for more families, sooner.
Mark Pentecost added, "Moffitt has changed the definition of what's possible in myeloma care. We're proud to give, and prouder still to stand shoulder to shoulder with the scientists and doctors who are about to make history. No one should die of cancer, not when we're this close to a cure."
