The bill for the AI build is easy to see, and the payback is already turning up in what advertisers pay for an ad.
Meta Platforms (META) stock trades about 25% below its 52-week high. What the market has repriced is the cost side, and it is easy to read: capital spending of $130 billion to $145 billion for 2026. The payback is the part with no date on it, because the company has not given one.
Advantage+ Is Already A Large Part Of What Meta Sells
The company's Advantage+ solutions, which hand targeting, placement, and budget decisions to the ad system itself, reached an annual revenue run rate above $75 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Against $228.2 billion of company revenue over the trailing twelve months, that run rate is not a pilot; it is a large share of what Meta Platforms sells. On the ranking side, Meta Generative Recommender replaces per-ad scoring with language models that weigh ad content and a person's interests together. Separately, the company credits its ads ranking work with an 8.3% increase in ad clicks and a 15.7% uplift in conversions on Facebook.
Advertisers Are Paying More Per Ad, Two Quarters Running
The proof that the compute pays is not engagement. It is price. The global average price per ad rose 12% year over year in both the first and second quarters of 2026, which the company credits to ad performance gains, macro and currency. Over the same two quarters, impression growth slowed from 19% to 14%. The volume half of ad growth is slowing while the price half holds, and advertisers bid higher when the clicks convert. Macro and currency sit inside that 12% too, so it is not clean proof, but it is payback starting to show up in the numbers rather than on a roadmap.
The Upside Is Real, But It All Rides On One Engine
Be honest about size. Non-advertising app revenue crossed $1 billion in the second quarter of 2026, a first, on WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions, while Meta One, a new public developer API and business agents on Instagram all stay early. None of that re-rates a company this large. The ad engine can, and this stock does move when the case turns: it has gained more than 30% in under two months on 11 occasions since 2012. The bear's objection is cash: free cash flow fell to $784 million in the second quarter of 2026, and there is still no 2027 spending outlook. So the number to watch when third-quarter 2026 results land is the average price per ad, the same test worth applying to every name sitting this far below its high.
