Bridging Climate Science and Financial Resilience

The Copernicus Thematic Workshop on Climate Risks for Insurance and Finance will explore how Earth Observation (EO) can support the financial and Insurance sectors in understanding, assessing, and managing climate-related risks.

Organised by EUSPA and the European Commission in collaboration with the Copernicus Entrusted Entities, the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and the German Weather Service (DWD), this hybrid event will take place on Monday, 1 June 2026, in Brussels and online.

As part of the series of Copernicus workshops, this event will provide a platform for dialogue between financial institutions, insurers, reinsurers, policymakers, researchers, and Earth Observation service providers. It will demonstrate how Copernicus EO data and services can address real-world challenges in risk assessment, regulatory reporting, and climate resilience, while guiding the evolution of Copernicus services to better meet sector-specific needs.

Climate-related events (floods, wildfires, droughts, heatwaves, and long-term climate shifts) directly affect asset values, insurance claims, mortgage portfolios, underwriting models, and investment strategies. Financial institutions need robust, data-driven insights to reduce uncertainty, anticipate losses, and build climate-smart strategies.

Copernicus delivers essential tools for climate risk assessment, event footprint analysis, portfolio monitoring, and alignment with EU policy frameworks. This workshop will showcase practical applications of Copernicus services while offering a forum to discuss operational challenges and emerging user needs.

Workshop highlights and objectives

The one-day event will focus on:

  • Understanding EO applications in financial and insurance risk assessment.
  • Demonstrating Copernicus tools for long-term climate risk modelling, exposure, and event footprint analysis.
  • Sharing user needs and expectations from banks, insurers, regulators, and public authorities.
  • Discussing operational, legal, and technical challenges to integrating EO into workflows.
  • Shaping the future evolution of Copernicus services for the finance and insurance sectors.
