Delmarva Power Making Progress Restoring Customers while Winter Storm Hernando Damage Assessment Continues

Delmarva Power crews are making progress responding to widespread damage and power outages as Winter Storm Hernando continues to impact the company's Delaware and Maryland service area. The storm brought a historic amount of heavy, wet snow and gusty winds, of 55 miles per hour or more, which have brought down trees and tree branches, causing widespread damage to the local energy grid.

More than 77,000 Delmarva Power customers experienced service interruptions during the storm, with nearly 65 percent of customers restored. As of 2 p.m., approximately 27,000 customers remain without service. The most heavily impacted areas are in Sussex County, Del. and Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties in Maryland.

Unfortunately, at this time we cannot provide estimated restoration times due to the extent of damage and the need for additional damage assessment. Delmarva Power's goal is to provide customers with the most accurate information possible so they can make informed decisions regarding alternate or necessary arrangements. Crews will continue to update estimated restoration times as additional damage is assessed, and work is performed.

Delmarva Power's Emergency Response Organization remains activated. All available Delmarva Power field personnel, including more than 100 local and out-of-state contractors, are responding to restore service safely and as quickly as possible. An additional 100 contract personnel from Indiana, Alabama and New Jersey will join to support the restoration effort within the next 18 hours. Due to the impacts from this historic weather event, Delmarva Power crews and contractors will be working around the clock for several days to restore power for all customers.

To support customers who are without power, warming centers are open and available at the following locations:

  • Delaware:
    • New Castle County: William Hicks Anderson Community Center, 501 N Madison Street, Wilmington, DE 19801
    • Kent County: Dover High School, 1 Dover High Drive, Dover, DE 19904
    • Sussex County: Sussex Central Middle School, 26026 Patriots Way, Georgetown, DE 19947
  • Maryland:

If a power outage has occurred:

  • Customers should report outages and downed wires.
  • Safety is the company's top priority. Customers are urged to stay away from downed wires and assume any downed wire is energized.
  • To report an outage or downed wire, call (1-800-898-8042) or report and track through Delmarva Power's mobile app or website at delmarva.com/Storm.
  • Customers also can text "Out" to 67972 to report their outage.
  • Customers must first text "ADD OUTAGE" to 67972 to sign up for this service.
  • Customers also are encouraged to follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/DelmarvaPower and on X, formerly known as Twitter, at x.com/DelmarvaConnect to get the latest information from the company.

For Natural Gas Customers (New Castle County only):

  • Please keep your natural gas appliance vents clear. Identify the location of outside utility equipment such as natural gas or electric meters and gas regulators that could be covered in snow and may be susceptible to damage from snow shovels and mechanized snow removal equipment.
  • Know where your natural gas appliances vent to the exterior and ensure the vents are clear. If these vents become blocked by snow or ice, exhaust may back up resulting in carbon monoxide build-up or release of natural gas.
  • Use a broom or brush to gently clear the area around the meter of anything blocking it, including debris, ice and snow.
  • Do not melt ice or snow on meters with a heat source, and do not chip or scrape ice. These methods can damage or break the meter.
  • It is also important to remove icicles that hang over the meter and can drip freezing water that may damage equipment.
  • If you smell natural gas or suspect a gas leak, get to a safe location and immediately call 9-1-1 or Delmarva Power at 302-454-0317.
