Washington, D.C. - Congressman Wesley Hunt introduced the Congressional Civics Act of 2026.

The Constitution is built on the foundation of American values. Our leaders are the guardians of these fundamental principles that shape this country--emphasizing the necessity for those entrusted with legislative power to understand the context of American governance and history.

Individuals seeking citizenship must demonstrate basic knowledge of American history. Members of Congress should have to demonstrate the same, if not more, level of knowledge of the American Constitution and history.

H.J.Res. 146 of the 119th Congress responds to this challenge by proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow Congress to require its Members to demonstrate a basic level of competence in American civics. The Congressional Civics Act of 2026 sets up the framework to carry out that amendment once ratified and includes interim steps to encourage greater constitutional literacy within Congress.

Statement From Congressman Hunt:

"When our nation's leaders assume office, they swear an oath to serve the American people and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. This solemn promise ensures the safety and well-being of our country and its citizens.

It is crucial that our representatives deeply understand this oath. Therefore, passing this legislation is vital to confirm that our leaders are knowledgeable about the Constitution and American history.

A solid grasp of this understanding is key to safeguarding American values. Without knowledge of history, the mistakes of the past are likely to be repeated."
