Mayor Bowser to Call on Congress to Preserve DC Medicaid

(Washington, DC)- On Friday, May 2 at 10:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will call on Congress to preserve the District's Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP). The FMAP rate determines how much the federal government contributes to Medicaid costs. Congress is considering a proposal to reduce DC's FMAP from 70% to 50%, a change that would result in a $2.1 billion loss in funding for hospitals, universities, and community providers. DC's 70% rate was established by Congress in the 1997 Revitalization Act to reflect the District's unique lack of revenue options that are available to other states.

At Friday's event, the Mayor will emphasize the importance of protecting DC's Medicaid funding to ensure the city can continue providing high-quality care to all who live in, work in, and visit the city and region.
