PONTIAC, Mich. - A jury unanimously found Daniel John Giacchina, a 34-year-old resident of Madison Heights, guilty on all counts, including Felony Murder and First-Degree Child Abuse, for the death of 6-year-old Giovanni "Chulo" Jennings on Tuesday in Oakland County's Sixth Circuit Court.
On July 30, 2024, the Madison Heights Police and Fire Departments responded to a 911 call reporting that Giovanni Jennings was not breathing. He was hospitalized but died on July 31, 2024. His death was determined to have been caused by blunt-force trauma and a perforated bowel. A subsequent investigation determined that he had been beaten and abused by his mother, Elaina Jennings, and Giacchina.
Elaina Jennings was found guilty of Felony Murder, First-Degree Child Abuse, and Lying to a Peace Officer in a separate trial in March. She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 1 in Sixth Circuit Court.
"Giovanni Jennings deserved love and protection from the adults in his life," said Prosecutor McDonald. "While we cannot bring him back, these verdicts hold Daniel Giacchina and Elaina Jennings accountable for the horrific abuse of an innocent six-year-old boy who should still be with us."
Giacchina was found guilty of Felony Murder, First-Degree Child Abuse, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, Felony-Firearm, Felon in Possession of Ammunition, and Lying to a Peace Officer. He faces up to life in prison.
Sentencing is scheduled for September 9 in Sixth Circuit Court.
