UC Sets Another Enrollment Record, Bucking Statewide Trend

CHARLESTON, WV- October 7, 2025 - Continuing an upward trend that spans more than a decade, the University of Charleston announced today it has set another enrollment record: 3,032 students for 2025, the highest total since 1969.

While many colleges and universities across the country and within West Virginia have seen enrollment declines and are struggling to return to their previous peaks, UC continues to grow.

From 2013 to 2023, West Virginia's four-year institutions collectively lost 16.2% of their enrollment, nearly double the national average decline of 8.4%. During that same time, UC grew by 42.5%, according to data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Of the 18 four-year institutions tracked statewide, only three showed growth over the past decade, and UC's increase was by far the largest.

UC is also the only private four-year institution in West Virginia to experience enrollment growth during this period. That momentum has continued, with UC setting new records year after year, including a 15% increase in new undergraduate enrollment, a 4% increase in total degree-seeking students, and 722 students living on campus, marking a 5% increase from the previous year.

This milestone follows another major recognition, where UC was recently named The Best College in West Virginia by Niche.com, which ranks schools across the country based on academics, admissions, student experience, and alumni reviews.

Together, these achievements highlight the growing momentum behind UC's mission to provide accessible, high-quality education that meets students where they are in the classroom, online, and in the workforce.

UC's success is driven by its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of students and employers. The university has expanded programs in high-demand fields such as healthcare, business, and technology; strengthened partnerships with the armed forces and regional employers; and introduced more online and hybrid options designed for adult learners.

Combined with a career-focused curriculum, strong student support services, competitive athletics, and affordability initiatives, these efforts have positioned UC as a model for innovation and growth in higher education.

"Our record enrollment reflects far more than numbers, it is a testament to how we have adapted to the evolving needs of today's learners and the modern workforce," University of Charleston President Marty Roth said. "We listen to students, employers, and our community, and we respond with innovative programming that makes a difference. From expanding opportunities in healthcare and business to building partnerships with military and industry leaders, UC continues to evolve while staying true to our mission."
