Responding to urgent needs of the region, the European Commission has appointed expert Catharina Sikow-Magny as European Coordinator for the Baltic Synchronisation projects of common interest - the project to fully integrate Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into the continental EU electricity network. These 3 countries remain the last EU countries synchronised with networks of non-EU countries, in this case Russia (including Kaliningrad) and Belarus. Their synchronisation with the EU networks is one of the most urgent priorities for EU energy infrastructure, and has already received political, technical and financial support for the past 12 years. With the target date for completing the synchronisation in February 2025 and additional measures to be implemented in the years to come, the Commission is keen to ensure the closest possible coordination between the respective EU countries and the Transmission System Operators (TSOs). The development of a series of energy interconnections and the implementation of market measures in the region integrating all Member States into the internal energy market has been the priority work of the Commission under the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan since 2008.
Under the Trans-European Network for Energy (TEN-E) Regulation (EU/2022/869), the Commission may designate, in agreement with the EU countries concerned, European coordinators for projects of common interest.
