Authorities remain on constant alert as heatwave continues

The Government of the Republic of Serbia announced that, according to a report submitted by the line authorities to the Operational Team of the Emergency Response Team, 33 open-space fires are currently active in Serbia, with the most challenging fires in the Deliblato Sands, on Mt. Stolovi and in the village of Breznica in the municipality of Bujanovac.

Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, announced that the Emergency Response Team would analyse the current situation caused by adverse weather conditions and possible new measures to mitigate the consequences at its session tomorrow.

He stressed that the continuation of the heatwave, which is expected to persist in the coming period according to forecasts, requires constant vigilance by all relevant authorities and coordination aimed at ensuring effective action to prevent all consequences.

The fire in the Deliblato Sands has affected more than 2,000 hectares, while the fire on Mt. Stolovi has spread across approximately 200 hectares. Efforts are also under way to extinguish the fire in the village of Breznica in the municipality of Bujanovac, which has affected more than 200 hectares.

Following his visit to the fire site in the Deliblato Sands yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić, who is also Commander of the Emergency Response Team, today visited the fire sites on Mt. Stolovi and in the village of Breznica in the municipality of Bujanovac together with Head of the Emergency Situations Sector Luka Čaušić.

Taking into account the current weather and hydrological conditions, high temperatures, the dry period and the occurrence of active fires at several locations across the Republic of Serbia, the Emergency Situations Sector is continuously monitoring the situation and taking measures in line with developments and within its remit.

Public water management company Vode Vojvodine has continued activities aimed at restoring the normal operation of the Bezdan and Bogojevo pumping stations. The measures taken so far, together with the rise in the Danube water level, have contributed to a slight increase in the water level in the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem.
