MATSUI STATEMENT MARKING FOUR YEARS AFTER JANUARY 6TH INSURRECTION AT U.S. CAPITOL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) issued the following statement marking four years after the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol complex.

"Free and fair elections, upholding the will of the people, and the peaceful transfer of power are the foundation of American democracy," said Congresswoman Matsui. "Four years ago, these fundamental principles were tested like never before. Thousands of rioters stormed the Capitol, desecrating our citadel of democracy while seeking to overthrow our democratic process with violence. Over 140 brave Capitol Police officers suffered serious injuries and several ultimately lost their lives as a result of those horrific events. America was reminded that our most sacred democratic processes are as equally precious as they are fragile."

"Today, we once again held true to our ideals by certifying the results of the presidential election," Matsui continued. "The will of the American people is still the mandate from which all elected officials are entrusted with power. We take an oath to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law. To affirm a shared commitment to American democratic traditions. To never allow politics to rule above these principles."
