Congressman Shri Thanedar Urges Supreme Court to Defend Immigrants from Donald Trump

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Shri Thanedar, the Top Democrat on the Homeland Security's Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court hearing arguments on the legality of Donald Trump's attacks on birthright citizenship.

"As an immigrant who came to this country with nothing but a suitcase and $20 in my pocket, this Supreme Court case on birthright citizenship is deeply personal to me. The 14th Amendment is clear: the children of immigrants are guaranteed US citizenship. The Supreme Court must reject the President's racist attacks and stand with the immigrants who have always made our country great.

Additionally, President Trump is clearly trying to intimidate the Supreme Court into ruling in his favor by taking the unprecedented step of attending these Supreme Court arguments, the first sitting president to do so. Despite President Trump's wishes, he cannot rewrite the Constitution: America has no kings."

Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes. As a champion for working families, Shri is committed to advancing economic opportunities, education, healthcare access, and entrepreneurship for underserved communities. Drawing from his journey from poverty to success, he works tirelessly to uplift Metro Detroit, ensuring every resident has the resources and support they need to thrive.
