Consumers Energy Restores Power to Most Customers Following Storm and High Winds

Jackson, Mich. Tuesday, April 28, 2026

Consumers Energy has returned power to over 80% of roughly 90,000 customers that were affected by strong winds since late Monday afternoon. Over 600 crews remain at work going into the night to finish restoring the hardest-hit communities, mostly in Calhoun, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph counties.

"We're grateful for the patience and understanding of our customers these last 24 hours. We understand it's a hardship to lose power, which is what drives our determination as safely and efficiently as we can," said Norm Kapala, one of Consumers Energy's officers in charge for restoration. "To those who are still without power, know that we are standing with you and not stopping until our job is done."

Monday's strong storm caused most of the power outages that customers experienced today, although high winds continued to move across Michigan today.

Consumers Energy continues to operate mobile storm units and command centers in both Battle Creek and the Kalamazoo area, putting equipment and people into the field to speed up the restoration process.

Kapala reminded customers they can still check the status of outages at ConsumersEnergy.com/Outage. They can also sign up to get outage alerts and restoration times sent via phone, email or text. Text 'REG' to 232273 or visit www.ConsumersEnergy.com/alerts. If there are any questions or concerns, customers can also call 800-477-5050.

Consumers Energy is reminding the public to follow these safety tips:

  • Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas. Read more guidance on safe generator use here.
  • Consumers Energy also reminds the public to practice caution on the road and be on the lookout for crews.
  • Stay at least 25 feet away from downed wires and call 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050 to report them.
  • Consumers Energy will trim or remove trees interfering with electric restoration activities. Once safe to do so, cleanup ofdebris from tree trimming or removal during a storm emergency is the responsibility of individual property owners.
  • In some cases, the mast that holds the electric service wires to a home or business may have been damaged or torn away. Crews will reconnect the wires to a home, but only a licensed electrician can repair or replace a mast or a cable.
