Atlanta, Ga. - U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering funding through his historic Chattahoochee River Act to kickstart water infrastructure upgrades across Georgia.
In 2022, Sen. Ossoff passed into law his Chattahoochee River Act to help improve water treatment, protect essential public works, and restore ecosystems along the river, which are all vital to Georgia's drinking water supply, agricultural industry, power generation, and more.
The first-of-its-kind law authorized the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to work on water projects up and down the Chattahoochee River throughout the state of Georgia.
Now, Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to deliver $750,000 through bipartisan government funding legislation that became law on January 23 to begin the Chattahoochee River Act's implementation planning, which will identify projects for construction along the Chattahoochee River Basin.
As part of the project, the nonprofit Trust for Public Land will work alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin identifying projects.
"In 2022, I worked across the aisle to pass into law my Chattahoochee River Act, a first-of-its-kind law to improve water quality, protect essential public works, and restore ecosystems along the river. I'm now delivering resources to begin planning for key water projects up and down the Chattahoochee River," Sen. Ossoff said.
"The Chattahoochee River has long been Atlanta's lifeline, powering its growth and shaping the region's landscape and communities," said George Dusenbery, Southern Region Vice President at Trust for Public Land. "Passage of the Chattahoochee River Act and the funding delivered by Sen. Ossoff will help advance the vision of the Chattahoochee Riverlands-strengthening the river's ecological health, improving water quality, and reconnecting people to the river along its 100-mile corridor-while building on TPL's more than 30 years of conservation work along the Chattahoochee.
