More than 100 donors and scholarship recipients gathered on April 12 for the Lock Haven University Foundation's (LHUF) annual James C. Reeser Scholarship Brunch, held in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center (DACC). The event served as a celebration of philanthropy in action - bringing together those who give with those whose lives are transformed through scholarship support at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven.

The annual brunch provides a powerful opportunity for donors to see firsthand the impact of their generosity, while giving students the chance to express their gratitude face-to-face. The event also recognizes individuals whose leadership and commitment exemplify the spirit of giving at The Haven.

This year, Dr. George '61 and Shirley Durrwachter were honored with the LHUF Philanthropy Award, which recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding civic responsibility through their voluntary commitment of time, talent and financial resources in support of the university's mission.

Longtime champions of Lock Haven, the Durrwachters' legacy of giving spans decades -supporting scholarships, academic programs and transformative campus initiatives, including a leadership gift toward the creation and dedication of the DACC, the venue that has hosted the scholarship brunch since its inception 12 years ago. Their most recent leadership gift to LHUF is helping reimagine and upgrade the Zimmerli Cardio Room, enhancing hands-on learning opportunities for students preparing for careers in health, fitness and education.

Also recognized was John Newcomer '84, recipient of the Wagner Alumni Achievement Award, established by Donn Wagner '66 and Mary Ann Zaffuto Wagner '69. The award honors alumni whose genuine, heartfelt efforts and accomplishments have made a meaningful impact on others.

Newcomer, current president of the Lock Haven Alumni Association, has demonstrated a deep and sustained commitment to The Haven through his leadership, mentorship and philanthropy. A retired U.S. Army colonel and alumnus of Lock Haven's psychology program, Newcomer has remained actively engaged with the university - supporting students, strengthening alumni connections and helping to foster a culture of giving back.

His dedication is also reflected in his family's philanthropic legacy. Following the passing of his father, Dr. Charles A. Newcomer Jr., a beloved 31-year Lock Haven professor emeritus, he and his family established an endowed scholarship in his father's honor - ensuring future generations of students benefit from the same transformative education that shaped his own journey.

"The Scholarship Brunch is one of the most meaningful days of the year because it brings our mission to life in such a tangible way," said Ashley Koser, LHUF executive director. "When donors hear directly from students whose lives have been changed by their generosity, it reinforces the incredible impact of their support. It's a powerful reminder that every gift truly matters."

During the 2025 fiscal year, the LHUF experienced a year of remarkable philanthropic momentum, including:

$2,800,477 in new gifts and pledges raised
$1,528,367 in support of scholarships secured
More than 400 scholarships awarded to Lock Haven students
20 new major gifts of $25,000 or more secured, including support from 10 first-time major donors and $1,203,325 in future estate gifts committed

"These outcomes reflect the strength and generosity of The Haven Family," said Erik Evans '88, vice president for advancement at Commonwealth University. "Our donors are deeply invested in student success, and their support is opening doors for current students while building a sustainable future for generations to come."

For students, the impact of donor support extends far beyond financial assistance - creating access, opportunity and confidence to pursue their goals. That impact is equally evident in athletics, where scholarship support helps student-athletes compete and succeed at a high level both in the classroom and in competition.

"Our donors play a critical role in helping our student-athletes reach their full potential," said Albert Jones '99, director of athletics at CU-Lock Haven. "Their support ensures our students have the resources they need to succeed academically while pursuing excellence in their sport. It's an investment that pays dividends far beyond the field of play."

As the event concluded, one message resonated clearly: the collective power of philanthropy continues to elevate opportunities for Lock Haven students.

Through the generosity of its donors, the Lock Haven University Foundation remains committed to empowering students, strengthening programs and advancing the mission of Commonwealth University-Lock Haven - ensuring The Haven continues to thrive for generations to come.
