Dedication and Renaming Ceremony Set for Largest Police Shooting Range in the Region

The St. Charles County Police shooting range in Weldon Spring has been expanded and renamed in honor of a pioneer in officer safety.

A $2.2 million expansion, funded by the FBI, has added 20 new lanes to the facility, increasing its total capacity to 50 target practice lanes. The range is being renamed in honor of former St. Charles County Police Sergeant John Bush, in recognition of his contributions to law enforcement training and officer safety.

Bush served in the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department and Police Department from 1967 to 2017. He was instrumental in overhauling the department's firearms and tactics training programs, placing a strong emphasis on officer safety. Numerous officers credit him with establishing rigorous training standards that ultimately saved their lives during dangerous encounters.

The name change was approved by the County Council with this statement: "John C. Bush served with honor and without favor, demanded excellence from all, and worked tirelessly to give law enforcement the skills needed to protect the public and themselves."

A member of the Bush family will speak at the ceremony, along with St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann, St. Charles County Police Chief Kurt Frisz, and Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in St. Louis, Chris Crocker.

The County's training center serves 27 law enforcement agencies, from local to federal, and was established in 2000. This facility is separate from the future Regional Police Training Center being planned by St. Charles, St. Louis, Jefferson and Franklin counties.
