Detroit Fire Department mourns the loss of Lieutenant Dale Fahoome

Chuck Simms, Executive Fire Commissioner of the Detroit Fire Department, is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lieutenant Dale Fahoome, a dedicated 27-year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department. Lt. Fahoome, a beloved member of DFD, succumbed to a courageous battle with Stage 4 cancer on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Lt. Fahoome's death is considered a presumed Line of Duty Death, based on the State of Michigan's Cancer Presumption legislation.

Lt. Fahoome's service to our city was defined by extraordinary courage, unwavering commitment, and deep compassion. Born and raised on Detroit's east side, he answered the call to serve his community early in life, graduating from Cass Technical High School and joining the Detroit Fire Department in 1999. For nearly three decades, he selflessly ran toward danger while providing inspiration and strength to his fellow firefighters and the citizens of Detroit.

A devoted husband and a loving father to three sons, Lt. Fahoome balanced the challenges of firefighting with being a pillar of support for his family, colleagues, and community. His leadership extended beyond fireground operations; he co-founded Motor City Fire, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting firefighters and their families.

"Dale was the embodiment of service - brave in fire, generous in spirit, and relentless in his fight," said Detroit Fire Chief David Nelson. "His loss is immeasurable, and his legacy will live on through every life he touched."

Details regarding funeral and memorial arrangements will be shared as they are finalized, in coordination with Lt. Fahoome's family.

The Detroit Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family of Lt. Fahoome, his brothers and sisters in the fire service, and all who were touched by his life and service.
