"We are very pleased that we have found someone with Mark's qualities in our own organization, he is the ideal candidate."
The Executive Board has appointed Mark Boneschanscher as Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering & Chemistry, effective 1 September. For the past six years, he has been managing director of the EIRES institute.
Boneschanscher (39) obtained his PhD in Chemistry in Utrecht after previously obtaining his bachelor's and master's degrees in Chemistry there. He then worked as a program coordinator at FOM and NWO, after which he became director of EIRES. In 2024, he was also acting managing director of the CE&C department for six months.
Rector Silvia Lenaerts: "We are very pleased that we have found someone with Mark's qualities in our own organization, someone who also knows the department well. He is strategically and analytically strong. He is a good listener, he is convincing and he knows how to find common ground. Moreover, Mark knows beta science in The Netherlands inside out, and he has proven to be capable of creating value from our knowledge. He is the ideal candidate for the post of dean at CE&C, a department that is undergoing a major transformation."
President Koen Janssen: "It is with great pleasure and confidence that we appoint Mark to this position, with all his leadership qualities. He is an authentic, honest and result-driven leader. With his appointment the department will have a strong, driven and connecting department board. We are convinced that Mark has all the necessary qualities to continue building an even stronger department, in which everyone can reach their full potential."
Mark Boneschanscher: "I am extremely happy and proud to be able to take on this role and to help realize the transition of the department, something I was already involved in in the planning phase. There is a big challenge that I want to take up together with everyone in this great department. The chemical sector is shifting its course towards sustainability and circularity, and that offers great opportunities for the department and all its staff. We are also dealing with significant growth in student numbers and at the same time we need to do more to curb the workload and to improve career policy. I'm really looking forward to getting started."
Sham Moodliar, managing director of CE&C: "I can confidently say on behalf of the entire department that we are absolutely delighted about Mark's well earned appointment. Not just a sharp mind, extensive and useful network, more than this Mark has already demonstrated through his actions over the last year a deep dedication and big heart for our department."
Boneschanscher succeeds Jos Keurentjes, who was the acting dean last year. In addition to being dean, Boneschanscher will also become a part-time professor of Sustainable Chemistry Innovations.
