City Advances Major Water System Improvements on West Friendly Avenue

The City of Greensboro is enhancing its water infrastructure with the launch of the West Friendly Avenue Booster Pump Station and Water System Improvements project. The new booster station will move up to 8.5 million gallons per day from the Main Pressure Zone into the High and West zones, ensuring reliable service amid growing demand and economic development across Greensboro.

The project calls for upgrading a 16-inch water main to a 24-inch main along West Friendly Avenue from Green Valley Road to New Garden Road. During design and preliminary work, crews will locate utility lines and survey this corridor. These activities may cause short-term, minor impacts on traffic and property. Because the station sits adjacent to a residential neighborhood on the 3700 block of West Friendly Avenue, the Water Resources Department will engage closely with the community. On Tuesday, September 29, the department hosts one of several neighborhood meetings to solicit input on the station's architectural design to ensure it complements the area. Greensboro's 2013 master planning studies identified the eventual need for enhanced water distribution reliability in the city's High Pressure Zone, and projected demand in the western part of the city makes the booster station essential. The tentative project schedule calls for construction to begin in late 2029.
