Harrow commemorates 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with moving community service

Remembering "The Few"

The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Anjana Patel, joined councillors, local dignitaries, and community representatives on Sunday at St John's Church, Stanmore, for a poignant service marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Led by Rev Matthew Stone, the service brought the community together to honour the courage and sacrifice of "the Few" who defended Britain in 1940 and to give thanks for the freedoms secured by their actions. Air cadets from 1454 Harrow Squadron and 2236 Stanmore Squadron provided a guard of honour, while hymns, readings, prayers, and a special poem read by the Mayor reflected on themes of remembrance, peace, and gratitude - not only for the past but for those who continue to serve today.

The congregation took part in an act of rededication to the values of peace, justice, and mutual support before the service concluded with the National Anthem, a blessing, and a collection to support the church's work. Afterwards, attendees gathered at Church House to continue the spirit of community and remembrance.

The Mayor, Cllr Anjana Patel said:

"This service remains as poignant in present times of conflict as during the Battle of Britain. I want to thank the clergy and people of St John's Church for hosting the service, Philip Rees, Director of Music and organist together with members of the choir, cadet units of Harrow and Standard bearers and attendees from ex-service organisations."

The Battle of Britain, fought in 1940, was a decisive moment in the Second World War, with the Royal Air Force's victory securing the nation's freedom and shaping the course of history. Harrow's commemoration served as a heartfelt reminder of their enduring legacy and the importance of unity in challenging times.
