Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) released the following statement in response to news that SK Battery America will layoff over 900 workers at their plant in Commerce, Georgia.
"My heart is with the workers and families affected by these layoffs. The Georgia workers at the SK plant have helped make Georgia a leader in advanced manufacturing. They deserve better than this. The administration in Washington has decided to put politics over people and slash the clean energy investments that helped bring these good-paying manufacturing jobs to our state. On top of that, they've also made manufacturing in Georgia more expensive with their harmful tariff taxes. I will continue to fight for Georgia workers and to protect investments that create good-paying manufacturing jobs in our state," said Senator Warnock.
Senator Warnock has long supported Georgia's clean energy economy. In his first term, he helped pass historic policies that spurred a new age of domestic manufacturing and increased demand for high-tech batteries, electric vehicles, and more including creating a $7,500 tax credit for American-made EVs and growing the nation's charging network. In a landmark report, Senator Warnock revealed that these policies were expected to add nearly 42,000 jobs across all corners of Georgia. President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill rolled back key industry-boosting tax credits and policies, threatening 42,000 Georgia jobs and the state's roaring clean energy economy. President Trump has also illegally withheld money for states to grow their EV charging networks, suppressing demand for these new technologies. Senator Warnock also pushedthe Biden Administration to implement the EV tax credit provision with "maximum flexibility" to ensure Georgia car buyers and manufacturers can fully benefit. Senator Warnock also announcedthat he secured nearly $20 million in funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to build out Georgia's EV infrastructure network across the state.
