FACT SHEET: American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Releases 2024 Shoulder & Elbow Registry Annual Report

New data encompasses shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair and elbow arthroplasty

ROSEMONT, Ill. (October 17, 2024)-The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Registry Program released the Shoulder & Elbow Registry (SER) 2024 Annual Report. With more than 424 submitting surgeons among 82 participating facilities including hospitals, private practices and ambulatory surgical centers spanning 40 states across the U.S., the report offers actionable information to guide physicians and patient decision making to improve care. The report marks the fifth edition of the SER Annual Report.

The SER collects shoulder and elbow procedural data across the United States. National data allows for establishing implant survivorship, tracking revisions and improving the quality of patient care. The latest annual report includes 36,296 submitted patient procedures, which is a 44% increase in procedures since the 2022 report.

Highlights include:

• NEW! Dedicated Elbow Procedure Insights - A total of 1,544 procedures were captured, including neuroplasty and/or transposition, radial head arthroplasty, removal of implant/hardware removal and total elbow arthroplasty.
• Shoulder Arthroplasty - Of the 19,357 procedures submitted, rotator cuff tear was the second largest primary diagnosis.
• Rotator Cuff Repair - The majority of 15,376 rotator cuff procedures submitted to the SER were performed arthroscopically with 59% including a concurrent subacromial decompression
• Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) - PROMs collection and analysis is a high-value component that will continue to play an integral part in healthcare quality improvement. The Annual Report includes analysis of the two highest volume PROM tools collected, The Veterans Rand 12-item Health Survey (VR-12) and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Score (ASES), which show substantially higher mean scores in postoperative compared to preoperative assessments.
