MBTA Expands Bus Service in Cambridge with New Weekend Route and More Frequent Trips

The MBTA is expanding bus service across Cambridge to make it easier and more reliable to travel throughout the city. Recent changes include the return of weekend service on Route 64 along eastern Broadway for the first time since 1981, more frequent trips and extended hours on Routes 66, 71, 73, and 77, and upcoming improvements as part of the MBTA Bus Network Redesign plan. These updates help connect residents to key destinations like Kendall/MIT, Central Square, Harvard Square, and surrounding neighborhoods.

Weekend MBTA Bus Service on Eastern Broadway for the First Time Since 1981

In December, the MBTA started weekend service on Route 64 along eastern Broadway. Route 64 is a local bus that comes every 30 minutes most of the day. On Monday through Saturday, buses start running at 5 a.m., and on Sunday they start at 6 a.m. Service ends at 1 a.m. every day. Route 64 connects Kendall/MIT Red Line station, The Port, Central Square, and Allston/Brighton every day of the week. The last time buses ran on eastern Broadway on weekends was back in 1981!

More Buses, More Often Around Cambridge

In December, the MBTA also added more trips and longer hours on Routes 66 , 71 , 73 , and 77 . These routes start at Harvard Square and go to North Cambridge, West Cambridge, and nearby towns. They start running from 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 6 a.m. on Sunday. Service ends after 1 a.m. every day. These buses come at least every 15 minutes, and more often during busy times. The MBTA added trips for Routes 71, 73, and 77 because the City has installed bus lanes which makes for more reliable bus service.

More Changes Coming Soon

The MBTA is making these changes as part of the Bus Network Redesign plan . The goal is to make it easier to get around Cambridge by bus. The plan includes 10 frequent routes, 7 local routes, and 6 community routes. More improvements, including 3 new Frequent Bus routes, are coming over the next 3 to 4 years.
