Colorado Springs City Council today approved a resolution authorizing the acceptance of approximately 100 acres of land known as the Pikeview Quarry.
The donation by Castle Concrete Company is part of a multi-phase effort that assembled more than 400 acres of former quarry and surrounding land in northwest Colorado Springs. The property will be added to the City's growing portfolio of parkland and open space assets, with future use to be determined through a public engagement process.
"This donation is an investment in the future of Colorado Springs," said Mayor Yemi Mobolade. "Pikeview Quarry helped build our city, but it also left a visible scar on our landscape. What was once a place of extraction will become a place of restoration; an enduring asset for future generations to come. We are grateful for this partnership and look forward to engaging residents in shaping how this space will best serve our city."
Mining operations at Pikeview Quarry began in 1903 and continued for more than a century, providing materials used in projects across Colorado Springs, including the construction of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Operations permanently ceased in 2018, and the site has since undergone an extensive reclamation process.
Reclamation work, completed between 2022 and 2025, included stabilizing slopes, improving drainage, placing topsoil, and planting 31,000 trees and shrubs. The work was designed and monitored by licensed engineers and reviewed by state regulators. An independent technical review conducted for the City confirmed that reclamation efforts have significantly improved site stability and that the property is suitable for transfer.
Pikeview Quarry is located on the northwest side of Colorado Springs, west of Interstate 25 near Centennial Blvd and Allegheny Drive at the base of the Front Range foothills. The City expects to finalize the property transfer in mid-May.
