The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, expressed on his behalf and that of the Organization, his deep concern and solidarity with the peoples and governments of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and other Caribbean countries as Hurricane Melissa continues to threaten lives and cause severe damage across the region.
In light of the situation, Secretary General Ramdin has had to postpone his planned official visit to Haiti, which was intended to advance dialogue in support of stability and democratic governance. He reiterated that the OAS remains closely engaged and, in coordination with regional and international partners, stands ready to support emergency response, humanitarian relief, and post-disaster recovery efforts." At this difficult hour, our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating storm. The OAS expresses its solidarity with the impacted governments and peoples and reaffirms its commitment to assist in relief and reconstruction efforts," stated Secretary General Ramdin.
The Secretary General further emphasized the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience mechanisms throughout the Caribbean, noting that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense due to the impacts of climate change.
The OAS, through its Inter-American Committee on Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNDR), in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and other hemispheric and international partners, will continue to monitor the situation and mobilize support for affected member states.
