SVSU reports enrollment growth

Saginaw Valley State University saw an increase in the number of students enrolled this fall. There are 6,906 students taking classes for the fall 2025 semester, compared to 6,822 a year ago.

"We are thrilled to be reporting enrollment growth and to see the fruits of our labor paying off," said Ken Fettig, SVSU vice president for enrollment management. "We have seen a tremendous amount of determined focus on students' success by our faculty and staff, and that resulted in more transfer students, more international students and higher retention rates among returning students."

SVSU welcomed 388 undergraduate transfer students, an increase of nearly 12%. The number of international students enrolled rose to 292, up from 224 last year, an increase of 30%. SVSU drew more students from nations such as Vietnam, Canada and Nepal.

The proportion of 2024 freshmen who returned for their second year rose to 78%, matching the university's high-water mark achieved prior to the COVID pandemic.

SVSU also reported an increase in credit hours of 3.4% after introducing a block tuition model, starting with the current academic year. Under the plan, students are charged tuition for the semester and may take 12 to 18 credits for the same price.

SVSU welcomed 1,336 freshmen this fall, down 2.1% from the 1,365 first-time students who joined the campus last year.

Fall classes at SVSU began Monday, Aug. 25.
