(June 10, 2025) - The City of San José has been named to the 2024 Carbon Disclosure Project's (CDP's) A List, the top status available from the largest global independent environmental disclosure system, recognizing global leadership in environmental transparency, climate action and resilience planning. Earning a spot on the CDP's A List is a significant achievement reflecting the highest standard of local climate leadership. Only 112 cities worldwide earned CDP's top status. In 2024, just 15 percent of cities scored worldwide were awarded CDP's top A List status, including 29 cities from across the United States, the most from any country. To be recognized with an A, cities must publicly disclose their data through CDP-ICLEI Track and meet rigorous criteria - including a city-wide emissions inventory, a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and a published climate action plan. U.S. A List cities are demonstrating that local leadership drives climate innovation, infrastructure investment, and economic opportunity. Transparent disclosure through CDP-ICLEI Track provides a platform for cities to track progress, engage communities, and unlock increased access to funding to accelerate solutions and strengthen long-term community resilience. "This achievement shows that San José's efforts not only reflect our environmental values but also advances our equity commitments by increasing access to cleaner air, safer infrastructure, and more sustainable services," said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "It's an honor to see San José recognized on CDP's A List for global climate leadership. We're proud to be leading by example-with bold goals like carbon neutrality by 2030 and real progress through our Climate Smart San José plan. We're taking bold action to create a cleaner, more resilient future and we hope other cities around the world will keep raising the bar for climate leadership," said Mayor Matt Mahan. "This award acknowledges the City of San José's climate work and highlights many partnerships we have forged, including engaging with our diverse as well as marginalized communities, to taking climate action," said Environmental Services Department Director Jeff Provenzano.
