University of West Florida's Dr. Giang-Nguyen Nguyen, professor in the UWF School of Education, was named the recipient of the Duaine C. Lang Distinguished Mentoring Award presented by the Leadership Foundation for Teacher Education. The national award recognizes Nguyen's extraordinary commitment to mentorship within the Association of Teacher Educators.
"Throughout my journey in education, I have been fortunate to be guided by many individuals. Some have left this life, but they still influence the work I do," said Nguyen. "Mentoring is a mutually beneficial relationship: each party gains as we share. I accept this award not just for me, but on behalf of all mentors and mentees. I have had great mentors here at UWF and outside of UWF. I have learned from the best and will continue fostering mentorship. I believe that if every mentee gives back by developing into a mentor for a future student, mentorship becomes the gift that keeps on giving."
The Duaine C. Lang Distinguished Mentoring Award is among the most esteemed recognitions within the Association of Teacher Educators, honoring individuals who exemplify the true spirit of mentorship. The award is bestowed upon ATE members whose guidance, encouragement and sustained support have significantly influenced protégés, fostering leadership, professional growth and long-term involvement in the Association.
"Dr. Nguyen's selection for the Duaine C. Lang Distinguished Mentoring Award is a testament to her profound impact on teacher education and her unwavering dedication to mentoring emerging scholars and educators," said Dr. Denise Soares, dean of the UWF School of Education. "She embodies what it means to be a mentor: thoughtful, generous and deeply invested in others' growth. Nguyen's selection for this award underscores her longstanding influence within the field of teacher education and her unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of educational leaders. Her work at UWF continues to inspire colleagues and students alike.
"It is for her memorable and powerful words of inspiration, her lifetime achievements as a professor and her authentic goodness as a mentor that I am honored to be her mentee," said Mercedes A. Musto, UWF doctoral candidate. "Her commitment to the field, care and concern for her students, and outstanding character among teacher educators make Dr. Giang-Nguyen Thi Nguyen an honorable recipient for the Duaine C. Lang Mentoring Award in 2026."
In addition to the honor of the award itself, Nguyen received a commemorative plaque. In keeping with the award's tradition of giving back to the education community, a financial donation will also be made in her name to her state or regional ATE unit ensuring continued investment in the development of future teacher education leaders.
