Senator Vincent Hughes Releases Statement on Ongoing Public Transportation Negotiations

August 31, 2025

August 31, 2025- Philadelphia, PA - Today, Senator Vincent Hughes, state Senate Democratic Appropriations Chair, issued a statement following SEPTA's announcement that fare increases and regional rail cuts will be paused in accordance with a Common Pleas Court ruling.

"A 21.5% fare increase along with a 20% service reduction for regional rail is not a burden SEPTA riders should bare because the legislature, especially Senate Republicans, refuse to come to an agreement.

"I applaud both Judge Street and Mayor Parker for stepping in to temporarily delay and ease the burden of the devastating fare increases and service cuts that Senate Republicans are forcing on SEPTA riders. We must remember though, none of these measures or even the cuts themselves would be necessary if Senate Republicans stepped up and got a deal done.

"It's extremely disappointing to see these cuts have a real impact and yet Senate Republicans continue to play politics with the lives and livelihoods of SEPA families. Senate Democrats remain ready with 23 votes to get long-term funding for trains, buses, roads, and bridges done."
