HONOLULU, Aug. 28, 2026 - Hawaiian Electric crews restored power to about 1,030 customers yesterday on Hawaii Island, including those in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Fewer than 400 customers remain without power. Approximately 99.4% of impacted customers on Hawaii Island have been restored since Hurricane Lala battered the state with high winds and heavy rainfall.
Hawaiian Electric remains committed to restoring power to the remaining customers. Today, crews will be in the Hamakua, North and South Kohala, North and South Hilo, Puna, North and South Kona and Kau areas. Most will be focused on going neighborhood by neighborhood, checking for individual service line outages as well as identifying and completing repairs to bring more customers back online.
Several crews will also be working to complete the repairs on a transmission line that serves the Kau district and will also begin installing more than a dozen poles needed to help restore power to Wood Valley.
Hawaiian Electric personnel, including crews from Hawaii Island, Oahu and Maui as well as from Southern California Edison through the Western Region Mutual Assistance Group, as well as contractors and support teams behind the scene, continue working around the clock to restore power to customers who remain without electricity.
As crews replace storm-damaged power lines, Hawaiian Electric is also working to strengthen the electric system where possible. In certain high wildfire risk areas, copper wire is being replaced with aluminum wire as part of repair and restoration work to improve system resilience.
Hawaiian Electric representatives will continue to be available at Vibrant Hawaii's Point of Distribution site at the Pahala Community Center to answer questions and provide restoration updates. Customers are encouraged to stop by for the latest information on outages, ongoing work in their area and estimated restoration timelines.
Customers who experienced major flooding and have not had their power restored must ensure their main circuit breaker is off and contact an electrician to confirm their system is safe to re-energize once power is restored. If you have photovoltaic panels and battery energy storage systems installed on your home or business, consult your licensed solar contractor regarding normal and emergency operation procedures for your system.
