WHEREAS, the State of Michigan places great emphasis on access to high-quality care to improve women's health and maternal health outcomes; and,
WHEREAS, annually in April, the United States observes National Minority Health Month to highlight the importance of improving the health of racial and ethnic minorities and reducing health disparities; and,
WHEREAS, annually, April 11-17 is recognized nationally as Black Maternal Health Week, founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, which amplifies the voices of Black Mamas and centers the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements to improve Black maternal health outcomes; and,
WHEREAS, in Michigan, Black women are 2.5 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts; and,
WHEREAS, while Michigan has prioritized maternal health, Michigan also recognizes the social and structural barriers that contribute to the high maternal mortality and morbidity rates for Black women; and,
WHEREAS, we must address the root causes of Black maternal morbidity and mortality through systemic change, social justice work, mental health, breastfeeding and doula care support, with access to equitable health services and programs; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan can ensure Black families have the same opportunities to achieve optimal well-being and eliminate racial disparities in maternal health outcomes;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 11-17, 2026, as Black Maternal Health Week in Michigan.
