ATLANTA - At the 2025 ITS World Congress, hosted in Atlanta from August 24 - 28, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has proudly unveiled the Day One Deployment District (DODD) - a first-in-the-nation initiative providing a live, immersive experience to guests from more than 50 countries and regions around the world with operational, next-generation connected vehicle technologies.

"We must invest in technology to ensure we're preparing for the future we all want and need, one foundationally based on safety and efficiency in all forms of mobility," said Russell R. McMurry, P.E., Georgia DOT Commissioner. "I'm very excited we will have Day One opportunities for everyone coming to the ITS World Congress, and to see demonstrations of the technology's practicality and provide them with real world experiences."

The DODD offers real-world, on-the-ground cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, enabling direct V2X communication. They are designated corridors or communities featuring live V2X technology where connected vehicle systems deliver tangible benefits to the public in the areas of safety, mobility, and efficiency. V2X technology is a proven and effective way to support safe, smart, and efficient travel for all roadway users, including pedestrians and cyclists, while also demonstrating the readiness of traffic infrastructure for intelligent transportation. These systems are not pilot programs or conceptual visions but are production systems, deployed at scale, and can serve as a model for the nationwide implementation of connected infrastructure.

"The V2X DODD proves that innovation is here, now," said Laura Chace, President and CEO of ITS America. "This experience exemplifies the theme of the ITS World Congress, 'Deploying Today, Empowering Tomorrow,' showcasing cutting-edge technologies that can save lives and improve mobility across America. ITS America is proud to have collaborated with our partners to show that smart investments in transportation technology are critical to transform our roadway systems."

The 2025 ITS World Congress has brought together leaders, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and industry representatives to discuss and advance the field of ITS, focusing on the deployment of technology to enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and foster economic growth.

Georgia DOT is hosting the DODD Designation Program Kickoff during the ITS World Congress. Conference attendees can learn more about the nationwide program, which allows other agencies and jurisdictions to deliver Day One V2X capabilities, as well as highlight those currently demonstrating real-world usage of V2X technologies.

The DODD aligns with the Federal Highway Administration's V2X Deployment Plan. If an agency or coalition wishes to qualify as a DODD, it must meet several criteria, including, but not limited to:

  • Deployment of V2X communications infrastructure
  • Supportive digital infrastructure and applications
  • Commitment to ongoing operations and maintenance

In addition to public agencies, private-sector partners may be designated as DODD Supporters by demonstrating active support and enablement of the technologies and services that power V2X ecosystems.

Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia's state and federal highways. We're involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike, and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility. The Department's vision is to boost Georgia's competitiveness through leadership in transportation.
