Winthrop to Provide a Look at History Through Art Activities During Jan. 19-23 MLK Week

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Jan. 19-23 events will feature dance, visual art, vocal performances and film and concludes with a campus clean-up, which will reinforce the university's commitment to service and shared responsibility.
  • There are no Winthrop classes on Jan. 19, which is the King federal holiday. Offices also will be closed.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - A week of activities to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at Winthrop University will be grounded in artistic expression and storytelling.

Coordinated by Collins Cornwell, director of student conduct with the Office of the Dean of Students, the Jan. 19-23 events will feature dance, visual art, vocal performances and film. "We will honor Dr. King's legacy while creating space for reflection, creativity and collective action," Cornwell said. "We will appreciate Dr. King's contributions to history through art."

The week concludes with a campus clean-up, which will reinforce the university's commitment to service and shared responsibility.

There are no Winthrop classes on Jan. 19, which is the King federal holiday. Offices also will be closed.

Here are the activities planned:

*Jan. 19 - Candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. in Dina's Place, DiGiorgio Campus Center, organized by the Xi Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The guest speaker is Jacobe Reid, a fraternity member and Chester Middle School teacher. This is an approved cultural event for students.

*Jan. 20 - Undance at 11 a.m. in Johnson Theatre. Student choreographers and dancers collaborate in an event organized by the Department of Theatre and Dance. This is an approved cultural event for students.

*Jan. 21 - "Sinners," at 7 p.m. in Dina's Place, sponsored by the DiGiorgio Student Union. The critically acclaimed supernatural horror film by Ryan Coogler stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers returning to 1932 Mississippi. The movie explores themes of sin, legacy, oppression and the spiritual power of blues music.

*Jan. 22 - "The Sound of a Dream," a performance by the Winthrop Chorale and Winthrop Chamber Singers, at 11 a.m. in Dina's Place. This is an approved cultural event for students.

*Jan. 23 - Campus clean-up from 2-6 p.m., sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and the Department of Residence Life. Those interested in participating should meet at The Edge in the DiGiorgio Campus Center.

Since 2000, Winthrop has observed MLK Day as a day of celebration, remembrance and service with events sponsored by various departments and organizations.
