The Pioneers Park Nature Center today announced that registration is now open for a Sandhill Crane viewing trip March 5. The guided trip will be from noon to 10 p.m. at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center near Alda, Nebraska, home to the largest Sandhill Crane roost in the world.
Participants will enjoy a shuttle ride, a stop at Mormon Island State Recreation Area for wildlife viewing, and a private blind experience to observe thousands of cranes settling in for their evening roost. The trip also includes a meal in Grand Island.
Guests should dress for outdoor conditions and may bring binoculars or cameras. Tripods are not permitted in blinds. The trip includes a quarter mile walk in low light over uneven terrain. Binoculars will also be available at the event.
The group will depart at noon from the south side of Auld Pavilion, 1650 Memorial Drive, Antelope Park. Participants should arrive by 11:30 a.m. The fee is $135 per person. The trip is open to ages 12 and older, and registration is required by February 23.
