This massive, 124-foot concrete girder, weighing in at 96,440 pounds, defies gravity as it's "beamed up" to the pier cap. The crew handles the raising of this key piece of infrastructure with precision, bridging the gap for the next phase of the flyover ramp.

High-altitude teamwork in action as bridge workers precisely align a massive concrete beam over its final resting point. In the foreground, elastomeric bearing pads are spaced across the pier cap, ready to absorb the load and allow for structural movement.

Spring Forward Safely: Navigating the I-285/I-20 West Interchange Work Zone
As construction advances at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange, the shift from winter to spring introduces new safety considerations for crews and motorists. Longer daylight hours, changing weather, and increased traffic volume demand greater awareness in and around the work zone. Spring brings warmer temperatures but also unpredictable rain showers, slick pavement, and occasional fog.
These changing conditions can impact visibility, traction, and overall driving behavior through the interchange.
Crews continue monitoring roadway conditions, keeping signage visible, and ensuring traffic control devices stay effective as weather patterns shift. Motorists traveling through the project area should stay especially alert during morning and evening commutes.
Spring typically brings higher traffic, including commuters, freight, and weekend travel. With lane shifts, lower speed limits, and ongoing construction, drivers need to slow down and stay alert while navigating the work zone.

Nighttime Beam Setting Reminder:
Drivers may notice nighttime beam setting operations this month. Lighting is carefully adjusted to improve visibility while minimizing glare-please reduce speed and stay alert when traveling through the work zone after dark.

Against a pitch-black sky, the I-285 NB to I-20 WB flyover ramp takes shape. The crew uses a concrete boom pump truck for this midnight pour of concrete into a massive yellow formwork, creating the inverted T-cap, a structural "shelf" designed to cradle the bridge beams that will soon span this interchange.

Spring Brings Opportunity at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange
As construction activity increases this spring at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange, so do opportunities for the local community. With longer days and major work progressing throughout 2026, the project team continues its commitment not only to improving mobility, but also to strengthening the workforce.
Workforce Development plays a vital role in the success of the project. The team is actively focused on recruiting local community residents for meaningful career opportunities tied to the interchange improvements.
As construction ramps up in 2026, additional job openings will be advertised across multiple trades and support roles.
