Echols County SR 376 traffic moving to new bridge

STATENVILLE - State Route (SR) 376 traffic in Echols County is scheduled to shift onto a new bridge next week, replacing one that was narrow and functionally obsolete.

The contractor plans to shift traffic Monday, Oct. 14, to the new Alapahoochee River bridge between Statenville and Lake Park. Traffic initially will be restricted to one lane while work continues on final construction activities. Traffic control will be on site to direct vehicles onto the new bridge. It is expected that both lanes of the new bridge will be open to traffic on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Once all traffic has moved, the contractor will begin removing the detour bridge that traffic used during construction.

The original bridge was built in 1956 and reconstructed in 1969. It was classified as functionally obsolete because of the narrow deck width of about 25 feet. The new bridge has 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders.

Work on the new bridge started in the summer of 2022. It is a federal and state funded Georgia Department of Transportation project with a total cost of approximately $10 million, which includes preliminary engineering, right of way acquisition and construction. The construction contract was awarded to Clearwater Construction Inc.
