City to increase parking enforcement at regional parks and open spaces

To help keep Colorado Springs parks and open spaces safe and accessible for everyone, the City is expanding parking enforcement to address unsafe parking practices that can block access for visitors and emergency responders and damage natural areas.

As more residents and visitors enjoy the City's regional parks and open spaces, growing demand for parking has created challenges, particularly at trailheads and other popular access points. Park staff continue to see vehicles blocking gates and emergency access routes, parking on curbs and occupying accessible parking spaces without proper credentials. These violations can limit access for visitors and prevent emergency responders from reaching areas where they may be needed. Parking outside designated spaces can also damage vegetation and contribute to erosion, harming the natural areas visitors come to enjoy.

"We appreciate everyone who does their part to care for our parks and open spaces," said Regional Parks, Trails and Open Space Manager Scott Abbott. "We want visitors to be aware of these changes and understand how responsible parking helps everyone enjoy these shared spaces."

Through a partnership between the City's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Department and the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), Park Rangers will receive letters of appointment from the Colorado Springs Police Chief authorizing them to issue parking citations across the regional park system. Rangers receiving this authority have completed the background checks, screening and the training required by CSPD. The City will begin with an education period to help visitors understand parking rules and the changes to enforcement before full implementation later this fall.

Visitors are encouraged to park in designated spaces, follow posted signs, keep gates and emergency access routes clear, and display a valid disability parking placard or license plate when using accessible parking spaces.
