Research Innovators Finding a Cure introduces students to pharmaceutical careers

High school students explored how scientific discoveries become medicines during Research Innovators Finding a Cure, held Aug. 4 at Campbell University. Hosted by Science Education Outreach in the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, the daylong program introduced participants to careers in pharmaceutical sciences, clinical research, industrial pharmacy, and patient care.

Students began the morning with a hands-on laboratory session in Maddox Hall. They later enjoyed a clinical research escape room, where they worked together to interpret clues, solve problems and learn about the processes used to evaluate potential treatments.

Following lunch, students returned to the laboratory for a spaghetti tower challenge led by three Pfizer employees. Working in teams, participants used spaghetti, tape and marshmallows to design and build their structures, testing their creativity, communication and problem-solving skills.

The day concluded with an afternoon poster session that gave students an opportunity to learn about current scientific work, ask questions and connect with mentors and members of the Campbell community. Through laboratory activities, simulations and conversations with professionals, participants gained a closer look at the career paths involved in moving medicines from discovery to patients.
