HACU announces retirement of President and CEO Antonio R. Flores

SAN ANTONIO - The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Governing Board has announced its President and CEO Antonio R. Flores plans to retire later this year, after three decades at the helm.

"Dr. Flores' tenure has been transformational," said Juan Muñoz, chair of the HACU Governing Board. "For 30 years, he has led with vision, determination and an unwavering commitment to advancing Hispanic-Serving Institutions and expanding educational opportunities for all students. His leadership has helped change the national higher education landscape, and his impact will be felt for generations."

Flores became HACU's third President and CEO in February 1996. During his tenure, the Association quadrupled its membership, budget and programs and grew into a leading national voice for Hispanic-Serving Institutions and for championing student higher education success. Under his leadership, HACU advanced landmark federal policies and investments supporting HSIs and their students across the county. The Association's advocacy contributed to more than $6 billion in cumulative federal funding for HSIs, while also generating millions of dollars in private support for its member institutions and their students.

"It has been the greatest professional privilege of my life to lead HACU and work alongside a team of dedicated and talented individuals, partners and members of the Governing Board to advance its mission on behalf of Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Latino students, and the broader higher education community," said Flores. "It has been an honor to be part of the HACU family."

Flores' lifelong dedication and contributions in higher education have been recognized through numerous honors, leadership awards and honorary doctorates from several universities. He has also served on prominent national boards and coalitions focused on higher education, equity and the advancement of the Hispanic community.

"The Governing Board celebrates Dr. Flores not only for what HACU has achieved under his leadership, but also for the countless students, educators and institutional leaders whose lives and careers have been influenced by his work," Muñoz said. "We are grateful for all he has given to HACU and to higher education as we prepare for HACU's next chapter."

Flores will continue serving as President and CEO during the transition period. The Governing Board will soon launch a national search for Flores' successor. Updates regarding the national search process will be provided as they become available.
